Vincent Royer was born in Strasbourg/France. After his studies at the Conservatoire National de Région de Strasbourg he studied in Germany with Ulrich Koch (Freiburg) and at the masterclass of Rainer Moog
(Cologne). During two years he received a scholarship from the French Ministère de la Culture for studying abroad. In 1989 he performed as viola soloist with the European Community Chamber Orchestra in Europe and Asia. Since 1990 he is a member of the Gürzenich-Orchester Kölner Philharmoniker. In 1991 Royer received the Xenakis price in Paris. As a performer of contemporary viola solo répertoire he worked with many composers such as Gérard Grisey, Pascal Dusapin, Denys Bouliane, Horatiu Radulescu, Earl Brown, Gerhard Stäbler, Robert HP Platz, Gene Coleman
and others. In 1995 he received the French scholarship "Bourse Lavoisier" for a three-month residency at the "Banff Centre for the Arts", where he premiered his piece "Chinook" for viola and tape. He performed at several international New Music festivals including Présence Paris, Festival RAI Roma, New Music Festival Salzburg, Wittener Tage für Neue Kammermusik, Festival Bello Horizonte/Brasil and was involved in many recordings at European radio stations. Royer readily takes varied musical paths in order to enlarge his musical experiences. In Cologne he founded the Alea group, an ensemble for improvisation and collective composition. In 1995 he realized a performance with dancers, visual artistes, poets, comedians (e.g. premiere of "envol" with the pantomime Jörg Gehlker, 1995, and "Allures naturelles", improvisations with texts by Pierre Alféri, 1998) He plays with freejazz musicians like Kent Carter (concert in Paris 1999) and Michael Riessler (performances in Germany and Italy 1999/2000). Together with the composer and researcher Gerhard Eckel he premiered at the Kunstmuseum Bonn "Traverse", an improvisation for viola and computer 1999. He has been invited by the "Renaissance Society" of Chicago to participate in a French New Music recital in winter 2000.
